That must have been a wonderful experience–I start to think that working with textbooks and other printed learning materials would be interesting, since it involves so much more forethought and conscientious visual/textual work than we would ordinarily think. As a student, I used to love those glosses and bubbles with “fun fact” that included illustrations. Thanks for sharing, John!

Good stuff. On photos and story telling? Back in the day I used to be a college textbook editor (I acquired them). I used to do engineering books, and the typical student in that field often is a visual learner. I always discussed with my authors how important it was to explain things several times in different ways. There was the straight text, of course, explaining theory. Then there was usually a diagram that accompanied it. Then the worked example that illustrated how the theory worked in a real life setting. Then of course all the margin notes that highlight and emphasize key points. Visual/textual learning/perceiving is complicated, but real stuff. Anyway, good post – thanks.
