THANK you, Anna--especially for those much-needed squishy happy hugs! I can feel them squeezing the sadness out of me, which is the best feeling :) I love that you connect hummus with family, and it reminds me of how much we really do associate our family with fond memories. Thank you thank you thank you!

We lack some context here, which makes any response incomplete. I think TIfa may be on to something. What might be really useful to do -- and this is incredibly hard, virtually impossible for most people -- is to go back and read your blog with the eye of someone doing research for their PhD. You've very open in your blog -- but I'm not sure if you realize how much you actually communicate. I think if you look, you'll find the answers in what you've already written. Read, analyze, synthesize. I think the answers are there.

Or maybe not -- I'm often wrong about these things.

Firstly, I love your Hummus recipe, Hummus for some reason makes me think of my family and loved ones, its a wholesome dip that is always served at gatherings where we laugh and smile and enjoy each other. So, thank you for that, its nice to start my week with fond feelings towards those I am blessed enough to have in my life.

I really do hope you are feeling heaps better Ala! Hang in there, eat chocolate and know that things/life/the universe will show you the right path, give you the answers you seek. Also, you should remember that if we didn't have the contrast, we would never grow.

Big squishy happy hugs and love across the oceans to you. xox

I wish I had some wise words for you, Ala, but know that you have lots of friends thinking of you. Sometimes it takes a little time to analyze the situation from all viewpoints---so till then, dig into your terrific hummus (almost exactly how I make mine :)). xo

Thanks so much, first off, for this wonderfully thoughtful comment. I should give you a bit more context for the thoughts in sharing here. My family and I are pretty open about our feelings--in particular, my mom and I have had some version of this conversation on multiple occasions, though perhaps I was not always as articulate as I am here. In terms of life approach and temperament, we're pretty different - what I take as a more laid back approach that emphasizes relational value, she often sees as indifference, even when there is an explanation involved. She's pretty explicit about the importance of being right (in her words), which can be a point of tension for both of us. But you're absolutely right to offer that advice, and I'll continue keeping an eye out for opportunitiws. If you have any other thoughts, I would love to hear them--and I really thank you for these thought-out words of wisdom! Truly.

I'm in agreement with Deb, but I also can't help but wonder if you've been as forthcoming with your parents as you are in this post. I think your relationship might benefit from them knowing just how much their opinions and words mean to you. You also might benefit from giving them the opportunity to inform you that you are not responsible for their overall happiness or their ability to form trusting relationships with others. Remember, they were already adults with decades worth of experience in building and maintaining relationships when they made you.
Whether you turn to them now or after this latest storm has passed is something you should think on, but you should definitely talk to them about this at some point. If you were having this issue with anyone else, would you turn to them for wisdom and the possibility that their experience might guide you?
